Somatotyping

Somatotype

This method of body typing is known as somatotyping where the individuals are given a score of 1 – 7, 7 beign high in 3 different somatotypes to give their overall body type. No one is just one type its likely that people will be a mix with possible one type being more dominant the types are: Endomorphs, Ecotmorphs and Mesomorphs

Endomorph: Enomorphs tend to have more fat on their bodies leading to a pear or apple shape. Their front to back profile can be wider than their side to side. They can gain weight easily onto their generally shorted frames hindering endurance activities. They are more suited to strength sports such as shot put or wrestling. The benefit of this shape is that muscle mass can be gained easier than in Ectomorphs are their size is useful in blocking positions such as Offensive linemen in American Footballs or members of the scrum in Rugby when power is exerted.

Mesomorph: These individuals tend to have broader shoulders giving them a wedge like shape with narrow hips. They have minimal body fat and muscular arms and legs. Mesomorphs are good candidates to become professionals in sports due to their strength and tendency to gain muscle mass easily while maintaining low body fat.

Ectomorphs: Ectomporps are generally slimmer and taller than the other two somatotypes with narrow shoulders, hips and chest and slim limbs. They remain slim due to their low levels of body fat and lack of muscle. They are not as suitable for powerful contact sports as their slight frame means they are more likely to be injured. The individuals struggle to gain muscle mass but dominate endurance sports such as long distance running and gymnastics. Their ability to stay lean does however have its down falls as health can be put at risk and women athletes with a Ectomorphic structure may seas to have periods.

The benefits to sport: Their size is good for contact sports where bulk is needed. They can gain muscle faster then Ectomorphs and genrally have a large lung capacity.

Mesomorph

Athletics

Most high speed agile sports

The benefits to sport: Can easily adjust their body to their chosen sport. Respond well to CV Training.

Ectomorphs

Long distance running

Football

Tennis

Netball (Height is helpful)

The benefits to sport: Dominate endurance based sports. Thir light frame aids aerobic activity.
